GOING TO CRETE?
‘FLISS’ a starving young dog with puppies - Crete October 2004
We found a skeletal young bitch chained in the baking sun to an empty oil drum (presumably as a guard dog for a nearby pen of goats) and fed her for the final 2 days of our holiday, whilst trying to locate a welfare organisation.
The locals and even UK ex-patriots we asked to help were not caring enough to do so.
She had two young live puppies and a further dead one decomposing in the oil drum. The drum has holes in it – so no real shelter from the elements.
She is very friendly and docile and fell ravenously on the food, as did the puppies.
She has pressure sores on her elbows and tail from lying in the drum or on the hard ground and her coat is sparse and dull.
Fliss is unfortunately black, as is one of the puppies – unfortunate as we understand that the locals apparently have a particular aversion to black dogs.
The location is a dead-end side road, so there is no passing traffic to take pity on these poor creatures. There are also cats and kittens in poor condition in the same location.
We are continuing to try to organise her rescue but the wonderful organisation who visited her on Thursday (Friends of Animals Rethymno) can do little at present other than feed her until they can persuade the owner to relinquish them. Then they need to find a foster home until she can be either brought to the UK or Germany (where they are sometimes able to rehome such sad cases).
If you expect to go to Crete, please make a note of the largest welfare organisation’s details and contact them (there are lots of internet cafes around) if you see an animal in distressing circumstances:-
